Forced Rusting

Forced Rusting is also known as:
- Rust Effect Coating
- The Rat-Look on Cars
- Rust Coating
What is Forced Rusting?
Forced rusting is a method we have developed to speed rust individual steel items that have been stripped back to the bare substrate. This forced rusting technique gives a kind of streaky rust pattern, giving the effect that water has been running down/across the item. The rusted finish is then protected with a clear top coat and due to the process the finish is different every time, meaning every item we do is unique. The process can be summarised as follows:
- The item is stripped down to its bare substrate, i.e. steel with no paint or grease on
- The item is forced rusted using a developed acidic solution by either dipping or poring
- The item is dried
- A protective clear top coat is applied to the item
Example of work carried out is as follows:
- Ackro props for Republic chain
- Filing cabinets
- Bread bin cabinets
- Car wings
- Shelving
- Garden Furniture
